Checking products and finding care

In an emergency

Call 119 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department (IGD). For urgent mental health concerns, including thoughts of self-harm, seek help immediately from the same services.

A short checklist

Judging health information online

  1. Who published it? Look for a named organisation or author with relevant qualifications.
  2. What is the source? Reliable pages name the guidelines or studies they rely on.
  3. Is a date shown? Health advice changes. Prefer material reviewed in the last two or three years.
  4. Is it selling something? Be cautious when a page that explains a problem also sells the answer.
  5. Does it promise too much? Words such as “miracle”, “secret” or “instant” are signs to look elsewhere.
  6. Does it say when to see a doctor? Trustworthy material acknowledges its limits.
